# 2 The Knight at Dawn

 

1. The Dark Woods

1-3

"I'll meet you at the back door. Be quiet."

"뒷문에서 만나자. 조용히 해."

"Yay!" whispered Annie. She tiptoed away as quietly as a mouse.

"얍!" 애니는 속삭였다. 그녀는 쥐죽은듯이 살금살금 걸어갔다.

Jack put on jeans, a warm sweatshirt, and sneakers.

잭은 바지와, 따뜻한 맨투맨과, 스니커즈를 입었다.

He tossed his notebook and pencil in his backpack.

그는 가방에 연필과 공책을 집어넣었다.

He crept downstairs.

그는 살금살금 아래로 내려갔다.

Annie was waiting by the back door.

애니는 뒷문에서 기다리고 있었다.

She shined a flashlight in Jakc's face. "Ta-da! A magic wand!" she said.

그녀는 잭의 얼굴에 플래쉬를 비추었다. "따단! 마법 지팡이!" 그녀가 말햇다.

"Shhh! Don't wake up Mom and Dad," whispered Jack.

"쉿! 엄마랑 아빠 일어나겠어," 잭이 속삭였다.

"And turn that flashlight off. We don't want anyone to see us."

"그리고 플래쉬 꺼. 누군가 우리를 보면 어떻게."

Annie nodded and turned it off. Then she clipped it onto her belt.

애니는 끄덕이며 플래쉬를 껐다. 그러고 나서 그녀는 그것을 벨트에 고정시켰다.

They slipped out the door into the cool early-morning air. 

그들은 문으로 빠져나와 차가운 새벽 공기속으로 들어갔다.

Crickets were chirping. The dog next door barked.

귀뚜라미들은 울고 있었다. 개는 문옆에서 짖었다.

"Quiet, Henry!" whispered Annie.

"조용히해, 헨리!" 애니가 속삭엿따.

Henry stopped barking. Animals always seemed to do what Annie said.

헨리는 짖는걸 멈췄다. 동물들은 항상 애니가 말한 것을 알아듣는처럼 보였다.

"Let's run!" said Jack.

"달려가자!" 잭이 말했다.

They dashed across the dark, wet lawn and didn't stop until they reached the woods.

그들은 어둠고 젖은 잔디밭을 뚫고 멈추지 않고 달렸다, 그들이 숲에 도착 할때 까지.

"We need the flashlight now," said Jack.

"우리는 플래쉬가 지금 필요해," 잭이 말했다.

Annie took it off her belt and switched it on.

애니는 벨트에서 플래쉬는 빼서 스위치를 눌렀다.

Step by step, she and Jack walked be-tween the trees. Jack held his breath.

한걸음 한걸음, 그녀와 잭은 나무 사이를 걸었다. 잭은 숨을 멈췄다.

The dark woods were scary.

어두운 숲은 무서웠다.

"Gotcha!" said Annie, shining the flash-light in Jack's face.

"잡았다!" 애니가 말했다, 밝은빛의 플래쉬는 잭의 얼굴을 비췄다.

 

 

* tiptoed : 발끝으로 살금살금 걷다

  tossed : 던져진, 고개를 젖힌

  crept : 살금살금 움직인

  shined : 빛나는

  nodded : 끄덕였다

  crickets : 귀뚜라미들

  chirping : 짹짹 거리는

  barked : 짖었다

  wet lawn : 젖은 잔디밭
